If you do go to social gatherings, be aware of your alcohol consumption, suggests Noah Kass, a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City. The connection between depression and alcohol is well established: Research from the National Institutes of Health notes that alcohol use disorder and depressive disorders often co-occur, and that alcohol can make depression symptoms more frequent and severe. “In colder and darker months, people with MDD often use alcohol and drugs to self-medicate, which exacerbates depression symptoms,” Kass says.
