FAQs
The Answers You Need
1. I’m nervous about starting therapy. Is that normal?
It’s perfectly normal to be nervous about starting therapy. However, partnering with a kind and skilled therapist can begin to calm your unpleasant feelings. I will work with you to create a very safe space, with your privacy being of the utmost importance. It takes courage to begin therapy and to have faith that it can bring you relief. Coming to therapy should feel safe — a place where you can be yourself and be free from judgment, including your own.
2. What if I don’t want to talk about something?
When you begin therapy, there will most certainly be topics that you don’t want to talk about. It can be unpleasant and uncomfortable to discuss issues that feel overwhelming or even terrifying. It’s typical to feel extremely vulnerable in these moments. During our sessions, as that discomfort emerges, we can collaborate on just how to help you feel safe when working through the difficult stuff.
3. Does what we talk about in therapy remain confidential?
You might already know that you want to share sensitive, confidential information with me. Please understand that anything you share remains completely confidential, unless there is an imminent danger to yourself or someone else. Rest assured that you can talk about anything without fear of that information getting out to others. If you have specific questions about how confidentiality works, you can ask anytime during our work together.
4. How many sessions will I need to complete?
The exact number of sessions necessary when embarking upon therapeutic or hypnotherapeutic treatment can be determined only by the client’s specific needs. Psychotherapy for anxiety, depression, disorders or ongoing behaviors usually requires ongoing treatment. Short-term hypnosis can address and treat habits like smoking, trichotillomania, phobias and sleep issues in as few as one to five sessions.
5. What will my first session be like?
Overall, you can think of the first session as a free-flowing conversation through which we start getting to know each other. We will probably discuss why your specific behaviors brought you to seek therapy and which techniques would best suit your needs. I’m also here to answer any questions that might arise about my techniques, experience or education. If you feel welcomed, secure and peaceful with me, we can discuss if you’d like to meet again.
6. What does it feel like to be in a hypnotic state?
7. What type of hypnosis is practiced?
A psychotherapist uses story, metaphor or imagery to help patients form an awareness of their habits and behaviors through indirect suggestion Milton Erickson, the so-called “father of modern hypnotherapy,” defined hypnosis simply as “communication” and as “concentrating exclusively on your own thoughts, values, memories and beliefs about life.” The trance state, he said, is “active unconscious learning.” During this state, there is a shift of attention from external to internal reality, the highly focused attention being directed on one experience at a time. All hypnosis is considered self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist’s role is to assist in this process. Hypnosis has been used in the treatment of pain, depression, anxiety, stress, habit control, post-traumatic stress disorder and many other psychological and medical problems. Hypnosis should be used as an adjunct to treatment with a qualified healthcare professional who is trained in the use and limitations of clinical hypnosis.
